Have you ever paused to sit on the beach early in the morning to wait for the sunrise?
You know that feeling of anticipation as the darkness starts to lighten up, the sky gets little touches of yellows and pinks that move out in all directions, the tip of the sun peeks out from the ocean waters... it's so exciting to wait and know that the sun is going to rise yet again - right in front of your eyes.
I took this photo at the beach a few weeks ago and can feel the magic of that moment again just by looking at it now. What a beautiful moment! But trying to hold onto or recapture that sense of joy and anticipation doesn't feel quite as satisfying today when I'm here in Ohio, miles from the ocean!
For much of my life, I would turn that dissatisfaction of the fun being over into more positive energy and start talking about the next vacation, the next trip to the beach, the next fun adventure. Going out ahead of myself, daydreaming, talking about what I was going to create or do NEXT.
For much of our lives, it feels like the good is always just a tiny bit ahead or slightly out of reach. If we could just put the tips of our fingers on it, surely we could pull it right towards us and grab on tightly so we can finally have it - and then not lose it!
This morning I was feeling that sense of restlessness and also anticipation for the next level of expansion in my coaching business and the word I heard in my head was "imminent."
Imminent is defined by a Google search (such a great resource!) as - "about to happen," "overhanging," "likely to occur at any moment," "projecting or leaning forward."
Imminent could appear to be a positive-thinking word, except that I heard it differently today. This time it felt like a perpetual limitation - if it's always going to be imminent, then when would it ever be an actuality? If it continues to feel like it's "going to arrive" then how can it possibly ever fully arrive?
Seriously?! Could that one small word be an energy block that's holding me back from achieving my clear vision of what's next?
All of this process was unfolding while I was laying on my yoga mat, looking up at the studio ceiling, quietly in shavasana (or corpse position). Yes, that could seem like a risky time to use a word like "imminent"!
When better to get clarity, though, than in the traditional completion pose for yoga that represents the ultimate relaxation of body, mind and spirit - the doorway to death. I have heard that shavasana originated with monks who were invited to pause in stillness each day and ask "If I died today, would my life feel complete? If not, what is there yet to do?"
We could learn much from that practice.
Today, I consciously relaxed my body while my head unraveled this use of "imminent." It had seemed like a motivational thing to do as I talked about my business plans - "the good is right around the corner!" "Keep visualizing it, watch it coming." "It's almost here!"
Yet my practice in every area of my life is Presence. Totality. Being fully IN the moment, living life and enjoying the NOW. Listening actively in conversations. Tuning in energetically to what currents are running under the surface - which requires FULL participation and attention.
Hmmm... it would appear that "imminent" contradicts Presence.
As I laid on my yoga mat, listening to the beauty of Snatam Kaur chanting Ong Namo, a new, deeper mantra of trusting life presented itself. New to me, but perhaps one you already practice.
"It's Happening NOW!"
Not later, not tomorrow, not next month, not "imminently" - NOW!
All of those programs and retreats I want to host and videos and articles I feel bubbling inside - they're already happening now. I can FEEL the vibration in THIS moment. How excited I am to share what I am understanding about life and how deeply my perspective is resonating with those in the same vibrational space!
This is what I practice in my client sessions, on Soul Shine meditation calls, in my family's daily activities... all of us bringing our full selves into the now moment that never existed before and something entirely new being created from that collective energy!
Consciousness expanding. "It's happening NOW!"
Every single thought, action, feeling, conversation... they are all already creating my life. Now.
And this moment is perfect exactly as it is because it is the only real moment to be experienced. Just like when we sit in front of the sunrise. Each breath we take into our physical bodies, each shade of color we see with our eyes moving out across the sky, each wave we hear with our ears crashing on the beach in front of us - it's all happening NOW in this physical reality. Not imminently in my imagination as I'm "leaning forward" into the future. It's Now. Here.
Each moment, perfectly unfolding as we breathe it all in, already creating the life we know we are here to enjoy.
And Presence allows me to feel it and trust that there is always yet another sunrise coming.
What a beautiful Life we are living!
So much love to each of you reading this in your own NOW moment...
"Divine Teacher, Beloved Friend, I bow to you Again and Again
Lotus sitting on the water, beyond all time and space, this is your way, this is your grace." ~ Ong Namo
